We left Troyes on Saturday and headed south, stopping only
at my favorite wine shop in Burgundy to pick up a few bottles from the great 2009
vintage. We got to St.-Remy in time for
dinner – one of those tasty roast chickens you see on the rotisserie in front
of many butcher shops.
Sunday morning was warm and sunny, one of those perfect
late-summer days. So we did what anyone
would do on such a glorious morning - we made a pot of coffee, warmed up some
croissants, and watched football. Yes,
thanks to wifi and the Pac-12 network, we were able to get a live video feed of
Stanford’s convincing victory over San Jose State. Is France a great country or what?
At noon we headed out to lunch at the home of our friends
Sara and Christian. We became good
friends during our last sabbatical and it is always wonderful to see them. Everyone exchanged kisses on both cheeks (firm
handshakes for the men) and then got down to business – champagne. Christian loves champagne and always has a
chilled bottle at the ready. It went
perfectly with the cherry tomatoes from their garden.
We gave them a few gifts from our travels, which led to
another round of kisses. This time even
the men got into the act (thought bubble above my head as I was kissing
Christian: Dude, your beard is short and
bristly, not long and silky like mine.)
Next were lamb chops, grilled vegetables, tomato salad,
bread, chaource cheese, and lots and lots of delicious Rhone valley wine. Then grapes from their garden for dessert,
followed by 30-year-old Calvados.
Sometime around 6pm we staggered home, the victims of
another 5+ hour Provencal lunch. It was
good to be back in the south of France, our second home.
